I scored this homely guy off of Craigslist. I drove about 45 minutes to get him. When I arrived these people had a warehouse like building FULL of goodies. Loads of furniture, home accessories and various other stuff. I was drooling but didn’t have much more than the asked price of the dresser I came to fetch and not much more in my bank account I use to buy my furniture to redo. I found another chest of drawers I couldn’t leave without and after all that drive I figured I better get more than just one piece. After some wheeling and dealing we came to a GREAT price for both pieces sooooo off to the ATM I went. That makeover is coming soon.
I saw past the chipped (not in a good way) brown paint and the ugly hardware from the 80’s. I am sure this makeover was great in its day but it needed help now. I sanded the chipping peeling latex paint down to find remnants of past makeovers. He used to be a bright blue color I suspect in the 70’s. Past that I found the scars from the old hardware I imagined was the old Hepplewhite oval shaped brass hardware with bails. I often wonder what happened to the old stuff when it was taken off to add the yucky hardware they put on there. By the looks of the empty lip on the back of the dresser there was obviously some sort of decoration on the back of this dresser so I just imagined what it might have looked like. I got out some scrap wood and my saw and created a piece. it needed a bit more than the curved wood thingy (the official name) I created so I added some wood appliques I had in my stash that I picked up on clearance , because you never know when you will need wood appliques. When the need strikes you don’t wanna run out to find some.
I painted him with beautiful Duck Egg Blue and Paris Gray Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and waxed him with Light Brown Maison Blanche Wax. I picked out 8 new pulls from my stash of samples I picked up at a yard sale in my ventures out on Saturday mornings. I’ll have to tell that story in another post. My husband thinks I am a hoarder but hey you never know when you will need new hardware, a table leg, casters for furniture……the list goes on. I always have extra pieces on hand.
After LOTS of love this chest of drawers is beautiful and is ready for a whole new life. If you are as in love as I am you can find This handsome piece at Consignment Showcase in Fountain Inn, SC.
